ReSpectacle Update

ReSpectacle~story by Tara Bragg

ReSpectacle, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, was conceptualized and spear-headed by former Iowa Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellow, Jeff Lynch. ReSpectacle uses the power of the Internet to facilitate redistribution of quality, used eyeglasses to underserved communities worldwide. Glasses are donated by members of our community. Volunteers then clean, catalogue and upload them into an online database based on the prescription. The donated glasses are then available on the website for free, matched to users' own refractive error, and provide improved quality of life for patients around the world.

ReSpectacle Update from Dr. Lynch:

There is a new feature on the ReSpectacle website that providers may find useful for underprivileged patients.

At the bottom of an individual spectacle info page, (in addition to "Back to search" and "Get these ReSpectacles") one can now "like" a pair of glasses or "Send" a pair of glasses to any email address via Facebook. The latter is a feature that may be helpful in certain situations.

One example would be, if Doctor in busy clinic checks Respectacle website to see if any glasses are available for patient A, they can get the patient's email address and "Send" to them. Then Doctor could feel comfortable that the correct pair was selected, but Doctor wouldn't have to be involved with entering remainder of demographic information (home address, income range, etc.).
